De Duitse bezetter maakte korte metten met de vrije pers en Vrij Nederland moest illegaal worden uitgebracht. Het blad omschreef zichzelf als \u2018strijdblad voor de bevrijding van ons land\u2019. De Duitse Sicherheitsdienst noemde Vrij Nederland een \u2018Hetzschrift\u2019.
