Bovenstaande foto van het kunstenaarsduo Christto & Andrew prijkt dit jaar op de cover van het Foam Magazine Talent Issue. Christto Sanz en Andrew Weir zijn werkzaam en woonachtig te Qatar, maar zijn geboren in andere windstreken: De eerste in Puerto Rico en de ander in Zuid-Afrika. Hun nieuwe thuisland vormt zowel de inspiratie voor hun werk als het mikpunt van het kritiek. Zo schrijft auteur Sean O’ Toole<\/a> in een essay over de fotografen:<\/p>\n

‘Underlying the pair’s interest in colour, excess and fakery is a strong critique of their adopted home. Simplistically, it highlights the mute tonalities of contemporary Middle Eastern art, which chafes against the pair’s own experience of colour in their birth countries. More fundamentally, the pop-propagandistic idiom of their work is both a reproduction of, and analysis of Qatar’s optimistic but unequal modernisation drive.’<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
